There are so many camps out there and on the surface it seems like they all do basically the same things. It truly becomes hard to differentiate between camps.

The truth about camp is this–for even the best camps, the amount of improvement that can be achieved in a single week is limited. Most camps won’t admit that. For significant improvement to happen, the training must continue  for much longer than 1 week.

Most players really want to improve. They are willing to work on their game, but they just don’t know how.  So what can be done? Well, this is where the difference between SGBC and other camps is clear. At SGBC, we not only teach the skills and attitudes necessary to improve in the game of basketball, we also give each player a very clear strategy for continuing their improvement after they leave us. How do we do this?
  • Individual Report Cards: Most camps just teach the players for the week and then they go home wondering how they did or if they improved. At SGBC, each player will get an Individual Report Card at the end of the week. This report card will give players a grade on all of the tangible and intangible parts of the game. Players will know where they stand and what they need to improve on. Coaches will write personal comments which clearly state the player’s strengths and weaknesses. This is just another example of the “personal touch” that so many have come to love about SGBC.

  • Workout Plan: Included with the report card, each player will receive a written copy of a workout plan that includes all of the skills and drills demonstrated and worked on throughout the week. The workout plan will include drills for perimeter players and post players. The workout plan puts these drills in a sequence that allows each player to build an efficient and effective self-improvement plan after they leave camp.

  • Morning Ballhandling: Ballhandling is one of the most important, yet under-practiced skills in the game. Every morning at SGBC begins with 30 minutes of focused ballhandling drills. By the end of the week, players will have performed nearly 100 different drills that will help them improve their ball control, hand quickness, and dribbling skills. These drills are included in the workout plan so that players can continue to incorporate them into their own daily training after camp.

  • Daily Fundamentals: Twice daily Coach Goldberg will teach the campers the fundamentals of a specific skill. Whether it’s shooting, finishing lay-ups, beating a defender with the jab series, or performing dribble moves properly, campers will get detailed, focused instruction and a chance to practice each skill. During these Daily Fundamental sessions, players are also shown how to work on the skill when they are on their own. These drills are also included in the workout plan.

  • Additional Opportunities for Instruction: For those who want additional instruction on the skills and drills, we have a number of options. Players can sign up for individual/small group instruction during the late pick-up period Monday through Thursday. Players can also opt for the Focused Shooting Training with Coach Goldberg. Finally, members of the St. Paul’s coaching staff have years of experience working players out on an independent basis. Some players may be interested in arranging workouts with one of these coaches. For more information, see the “Extra Instruction” page.
All of this is why SGBC is truly where good players come to get better. With the focused instruction, personal attention, and opportunities to extend training beyond camp, SGBC is the place to be if improvement is what you’re after! As we tell the players throughout the week, “You are going to improve this week; no doubt about it. But in order to improve significantly, you are going to have to put in more time than 1 week. And we are going to show you exactly what it takes to get it done.”

Where good players come to get better!
